Ephemeral Wetland Creation in Clay Settling Ponds

St. John's County, Florida

ERC > Projects > Botanical Expertise > Waste Management Mitigation

ERC created an ephemeral wetland in former clay settling ponds for Waste Management Inc. The soils assessment included evaluation of existing conditions including pH, USDA Soil Texture, clay mineralogy, and potential nutrient status of existing pond substrates, and seasonal high inundation depths and location of suitable A horizon material for topsoil at 6 potential donor sites slated for future disturbance.

Suitable topsoil parameters were examined including nutrient status, texture, and seedbank potential. ERC developed and implemented reclamation plan including topsoil placement, dry season flood irrigation, and selection of suitable ephemeral pond plant species.

In addition to selecting the appropriate plant material, ERC transported and planted the plants to assure optimal success. Annual monitoring and reporting have been conducted to document the successful creation of the system.
